New Paintings

I have long practiced a stream-of-consciousness drawing process to provide the content of many of my paintings. The results do not represent actual events or reality, but instead offer an alternate vision that holds great personal meaning. While each image begins in the unordered space of inspiration, I implement a carefully orchestrated execution. Before picking up a brush, I often take weeks to prepare sketches, staged photography, computer-aided montages and even scale models to accumulate support material for the image. The final result is often one of wonder and menace that asks us to pause and reflect upon a field of interpretation.

The birth of my daughter in 2008 roughly coincided with the conclusion of a six-year body of figurative oil paintings that investigated family and attachment surrounding the loss of my grandmother's childhood home on the south shore of Massachusetts. This point of dual transition brought with it an unexpected creative turbulence that proved to alter the direction of my work.

As a result of my re-immersion in children's stories shared with my daughter, I began to absorb their metaphorical depictions of animals. The creatures' appearance in my sketchbooks convinced me of their pursuit, and soon they began predominantly to inhabit the coastal landscapes surrounding the old family house of the previous series. There, the roles they might play in myths, folk tales or nursery rhymes are transformed in a decidedly grown-up domain.
